Dark Nights

Dark Nights

Before I came overseas, I promised to write accurately – including both the good and the bad.  I wanted to dispel false ideas of missionary life being a long vacation in a tropical paradise while at the same time showing that deadly serpents don’t always lurk in every dark corner.  Writing flows easily when everything is new and exciting, things are going well and one feels good, and people are interested and making decisions.

But what about other times?  Missionaries pass through dark nights, too.  I shrink from sharing discouraging news.  Sometimes words cannot express our agony of heart as pain and grief pierce to the very depths of our souls.  Silence, especially from missionaries who enjoy writing, can mean they’re just extra busy.  But it can also indicate intense battles with the enemy of souls.  When you don’t hear from us, don’t forget us in your busy lives.  Rather intensify your prayers that Satan may be defeated and we may conquer in every trial through the power of Jesus, who loved and commissioned us.

Most of my life, music has inspired, encouraged, comforted me.  When, like Paul and Silas, we choose to sing in our dark nights, God can use our songs of praise to shield us from Satan’s attacks.  When our lives have been shattered by the devil, God sees.  And He can transform devastation into an opportunity for Him to work “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.”  See Ephesians 3:20.  Below I want to share with you a song and some precious words of encouragement.  God bless as you learn to sing through your dark nights!

He Will Quiet You

In this life there are times of tribulation;

Hearts are filled with deep despair.

Heartache and pain and trouble abound –

Is there comfort anywhere?

In your times of trial lift your eyes to the Father above;

He alone is the Answer, the Source of peace and love!

He will quiet you – He will quiet you;

He will take delight in you and quiet you with His love!

His plans for you are perfect, and all His ways are rest;

He will give you rest as He quiets you with His love.

He longs to take you into His arms and gently shelter you –

Only He can calm the storms in your life and give you peace anew!

And He will rejoice, He will rejoice over you with singing!

And He will rejoice, He will rejoice over you with singing!

The Creator of all with lift up His voice

And over your life He will sing and rejoice –

He will rejoice!  He will rejoice!

He will quiet you – He will quiet you;

He will take delight in you and quiet you with His love!

His plans for you are perfect, and all His ways are rest;

He will give you rest as He quiets you with His love.

Come to Him for rest, let Him quiet you with His love.

His love, His love, His love.

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me; my heart within me is desolate.  I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Thy works; I muse on the work of Thy hands.  I stretch forth my hands unto Thee: my soul thirsteth after Thee, as a thirsty land.  Hear me speedily, O Lord: my spirit faileth: hide not Thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.  Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning; for in Thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto Thee.”  ~Psalm 143:3-8.

“Through all our trials we have a never-failing Helper.  He does not leave us alone to struggle with temptation, to battle with evil, and be finally crushed with burdens and sorrow.  Though now He is hidden from mortal sight, the ear of faith can hear His voice saying, Fear not; I am with you.  ‘I am He that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore.’  Revelation 1:18.  I have endured your sorrows, experienced your tears; I also have wept.  The griefs that lie too deep to be breathed into any human ear, I know.  Think not that you are desolate and forsaken.  Though your pain touch no responsive chord in any human heart on earth, look unto Me, and live.  ‘The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee.’  Isaiah 54:10.  ~The Desire of Ages, p. 483.

“They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.” ~Psalm 126:5, 6.
